The annual installation of a festive holiday wreath above the Bay Bridge’s westbound Yerba Buena Island Tunnel portal greeted drivers early Tuesday morning.

November marks the 85th anniversary of the opening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The span opened Nov. 12, 1936, six months before the Golden Gate Bridge.

West Oakland elevated pedestrian and bike pathway meeting set for Thursday

The public is invited to attend an online community meeting for the West Oakland Link project on Thursday, December 17, 2020, from 6 to 7 p.m. Hosted by the Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA), the Zoom meeting will allow people to learn more about the Link, including the planning timeline, funding and future opportunities for public input.

The San Francisco Examiner dutifully reported on Oct 16, 1940 plans to hand out cards to "autoists" who used the Bay Bridge, outlining seven rules for safe travel. Four years after it opened, officials felt the need to give people advice on how to drive the span.

Bimla Gill Rhinehart, who served as the executive director of the California Transportation Commission before passing in 2013, will have a planned public access boardwalk on Yerba Buena Island named in her honor.

The final two piers of the old Bay Bridge East Span were demolished on Veterans Day, November 11, 2017, 81 years after the bridge’s grand opening. In the above video, MTC’s Mark Jones joins Caltrans bridge crews to document the stupendous early-morning implosion.
