The Iron Horse Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing at Bollinger Canyon Road in Contra Costa County officially opened to the public on Saturday.
More than 82% of funding for the project came from external sources, including grants from MTC’s Transportation for Livable Communities Program and One Bay Area; the Bay Area Air District; and the Tri-Valley Transportation Commission; and Contra Costa Transportation Authority’s Measure J funding.
The purpose of the Iron Horse Trail Overcrossings Project is:
- To improve safety by eliminating conflicts between pedestrians/bicycles and vehicles;
- Improve vehicular traffic flow by removing the at-grade crossings;
- Eliminate unsafe crossing maneuvers by pedestrians and bicyclists;
- Encourage pedestrian and bicycle usage along the Iron Horse Trail; and
- Increase trail use by nearby schools by improving safety at the Bollinger Canyon Road intersection.
Partner agencies for the project include Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), Contra Costa County, and East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD).
