July 4th fireworks will close Golden Gate Bridge

The Independence Day Golden Gate Bridge fireworks event on Saturday, July 4 will feature fireworks launched from the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge. Due to this event, there will be closures of the east and west sidewalks, a full closure of US-101, and transit service changes.

Traffic Impacts:

There will be a full closure of the Golden Gate Bridge on US-101 northbound and southbound between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. with lane closures beginning at 8 p.m.

Both local and regional detours will be in effect during this time. Significant congestion is expected on all approaches to the Golden Gate Bridge starting in the late afternoon. 

Traffic that would normally take northbound US-101 over the Golden Gate Bridge will be directed over the Bay Bridge to the East Bay and back westward over the Richmond San Rafael Bridge. Traffic that would normally take southbound US-101 over the Golden Gate Bridge will be directed over the Richmond San Rafael Bridge to the East Bay and back to the San Francisco area using the Bay Bridge. 

Caltrans will be closing the northbound US-101 off ramp at Lincoln Boulevard in San Francisco, the southbound US-101 off ramp at Spencer Avenue in Marin County, the northbound US-101 on and off ramps at Girard Street in San Francisco, the northbound US-101/State Route (SR-1) 1 interchange off ramp, and the SR-1 off ramp at Lake Street. 

Transit Impacts:

Extended Muni service will run after the fireworks to help attendees travel home. Additional details on transit modifications will be posted at sfmta.com/july4. Additional Presidio GO shuttle service will also be added to support the event.

Pedestrian/Bicycle Impacts:

The east sidewalk will be closed between the two bridge towers from Friday, July 3 at 5 a.m. until Sunday, July 5 at 5 a.m. Pedestrians and bicyclists using the east sidewalk will be turned around at each tower to allow for pyrotechnic staging and removal. 

During the event, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on July 4, the east and west sidewalks will be closed to bicyclists and pedestrians. The west sidewalk will reopen for bicyclists only at 10 p.m.

Regular pedestrian access will resume on Sunday, July 5.

Parking Impacts:

All parking lots at the south end of the bridge will be closed on July 4 from 11 a.m. until the end of the fireworks show. Crissy Field and Marina Green parking lots will be closed to the general public from 6 a.m. on July 4 through 6 a.m. on July 5.
