For years, San Francisco's Embarcadero Freeway drew comparisons to the Alaskan Way Viaduct, both drawing much derision for blocking waterfront views.

The Loma Prieta Earthquake helped bring down the Embarcadero Freeway and now the Seattle version is being demolished as well.

In its place will be a double-decker underground tunnel, which opens Monday. Tolls to use the tunnel will begin to be charged as soon as this summer. Prices will vary on time of day.

Meanwhile, the seismically-challenged viaduct will be taken down over the next several months. Many in Seattle are cheering the change, saying the freeway demolition will help better connect the waterfront to the rest of the city.
