Expect crowded airports, heavy roadway traffic and busy buses this week as millions of Americans make their way to turkey, pumpkin pie and long, uncomfortable chats with relatives they see but once a year.

AAA is projecting 54.3 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more away from home this Thanksgiving, a 4.8 percent increase over last year.

Most people  – 48.5 million – will be in cars, a 5 percent uptick from last year. That will make for some terrible traffic, according to AAA.

The worst spot in the Bay Area will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday along northbound I-680 from Milpitas to Fremont, according to the AAA report. At least there won't be snow to deal with, unlike in other parts of the nation, but there could be some much-needed rain.
