On Tuesday, the public transportation industry recognizes and honors its workforce on National Transit Employee Appreciation Day.

National Transit Employee Appreciation Day is the perfect time to salute transit’s workforce. Use the official National Transit Employee Appreciation Day hashtag, #TransitEmployeeAppreciationDay, when posting appreciation to social media. March 18 was chosen as the annual date for the recognition because the date commemorates the first public transit system, "Carrosses à cinq sols" (Five Penny Coaches), established in Paris in 1662.

"Golden Gate Transit & Golden Gate Ferry transit employees do it all — conduct pre-trip inspections, pick up riders, collect fares, keep equipment safe, answer trip-planning questions — all while keeping you moving safely on your weekday commute and weekend adventures," noted the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. "There are so many behind the scene transit employees who deserve recognition as well. These include mechanics, servicers, dispatchers, supervisors, terminal agents, vessel masters, customer service representatives, and more."

The Bridge District if offering ways to commend its transit staff. SFMTA is also recognizing its employees.

Santa Rosa City Bus is inviting the public to share appreciations of its public transit team and their commitment to service.  AC Transit and Petaluma Transit also are noting the day along with many other transit agencies around the Bay Area.
