September is officially Transit Month in the Bay Area, and there is no better time to explore all the Bay Area has to offer on transit. MTC is the presenting sponsor of Transit Month.

This year’s theme is “Adventure starts on transit,” and organizers encourage the public to discover new experiences accessible via Bay Area transit. Think new destinations, new routes, new neighborhoods: See where the Bay Area’s buses, ferries and trains can take you.

Transit Month celebrates the Bay Area’s transit agencies, drivers, workers and riders, and aims to remind residents and visitors alike of how essential transit is in the Bay Area. Public transit benefits everyone — even people who don’t regularly ride transit — and keeps the Bay Area moving. Transit helps reduce traffic congestion, lowers greenhouse gas emissions and makes the Bay Area a better place to live.

During Transit Month, residents and visitors can look forward to regionwide events, a Transit Month Kickoff Rally in San Francisco, the Rider First Awards Ceremony, and many more transit-themed activities.

MTC will be participating in the following events:

  • All Aboard Bay Area Transit Day – On Sept. 23, MTC in partnership with Bay Area transit agencies encourages residents to ride the bus, take the train or travel by ferry.
  • All Aboard with Transit CEOs – On Sept. 26, MTC and transit agencies will host a multi-modal ride-along and social event offering the public a chance to ride with and meet regional transit leaders. The ride-along will start at 3 p.m. with a BART ride into San Francisco and then catching a Golden Gate Ferry to Larkspur before continuing with a ride on SMART and the bus after.

Join in on a month full of fun activities — review the full calendar of events on the Transit Month website.

Riders are invited to participate in the Transit Month Ride Contest – each ride a person logs will enter them into a raffle for transit-themed prizes and earn them badges in the contest app. Riders logged over 18,000 transit trips during the Ride Contest in 2024. Join the Ride Contest by registering at RideContest.com.

September also is Rail Safety Month and an important opportunity to recognize and support all the workers who make the system safe and reliable.

MTC partners with San Francisco Transit Riders, Seamless Bay Area, Bay Area transit agencies and other organizations to raise awareness about the important role transit plays to keep the Bay Area moving.
