Work crews have completed the final concrete pour of the months-long project to replace 31 expansion joints on the westbound upper deck of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.
With the completion of the final joint replacement last week, all plates have been removed from the upper deck roadway. Finishing work, including patching, form removal and the application of rubber sealant, will continue through July.
To minimize impact to commute traffic, this work will be performed at night. Motorists can expect lane closures most nights this month from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Photographer Karl Nielsen’s documented the work to replace 1950s-era expansion joints on the upper deck of the span.
