SMART marches toward Healdsburg

SMART to Healdsburg

SMART is extending its regional passenger rail service northward from Windsor to Healdsburg, reconnecting the city to rail transit and passenger service that is anticipated to start by late 2028.

The project will add roughly 9 miles of track, construct a new SMART station in Healdsburg, and extend the SMART multi-use pathway for walking and biking alongside the rail corridor.

Critical infrastructure upgrades—including improved grade crossings, bridge rehabilitation, modern signaling, and safety systems—are part of the project.

A design-build contract was awarded in 2025. The new station is funded in part by Regional Measure 3, which is administered by MTC's Bay Area Toll Authority. In 2023, SMART announced that $40 million in RM3 toll revenues allocated towards the Windsor and Healdsburg extensions were available.
