SMART celebrated the Healdsburg Extension Project Friday afternoon at the Foley Family Community Pavilion in anticipation of service starting in late 2028.
Extension design and initial construction activities are underway. The project will add roughly nine miles of track, construct a new SMART station in Healdsburg, and extend the SMART multi-use pathway for active transportation along the rail corridor.
The SMART extension is funded through a combination of federal, state, regional, and local grants, reflecting strong support for expanding sustainable transportation, reducing congestion and enhancing regional connectivity.
In 2024, MTC endorsed SMART’s application for $81 million to the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program and nominated SMART for $62 million in the Solutions for Congested Corridors Program. Securing these state funds with regional support helped fully fund the Healdsburg Extension Project. The Regional Measure 3 expenditure plan, which is administered by MTC's Bay Area Toll Authority, includes $40 million for the SMART extension to Healdsburg.
"At MTC, we think about transportation as a network — and the reality is, the network is stronger when it’s complete," said Stephanie Moulton-Peters, Vice Chair of MTC and Marin County Supervisor. "That’s why projects like the Healdsburg Extension and SMART’s arrival to northern Sonoma County matter so much. Completing the SMART corridor isn’t just a benefit for one community — It strengthens the entire North Bay and enhances how this region connects to the broader Bay Area and North Coast. Marin, Sonoma, and beyond all benefit when this system is fully realized."
Commissioner Victoria Fleming, who represents Sonoma County and Cities on MTC, was also in attendance.
Critical infrastructure upgrades — including improved grade crossings, bridge rehabilitation/replacement, modern signaling, and safety systems — are also part of the project.
The Healdsburg Extension Project underscores SMART’s commitment to sustainable and green transportation solutions. The addition of a new train station, along with the SMART Pathway/Great Redwood Trail, will strengthen regional connectivity and allow riders to travel from Healdsburg to Larkspur, where they can connect to San Francisco, and beyond.
