Old BART cars face future as...?

A number of BART cars are aging and are expected to be retired in the coming years, but what to do with them?

BART officials will begin discussing the future of those cars when they meet this week.

Scrap metal, museum pieces and even housing has been mentioned as possible uses for cars, but nothing has been finalized yet.

Interestingly, old rail cars have been used for housing before in San Francisco, but that goes back quite a few years.

BART may be on the hook to pay the federal government back for the old cars if federal dollars were used in their original purchase.

MTC helped fund new BART cars that arrived about a year ago.
