BART unveiled a new, accessible transit pathway Friday that represents a safety upgrade at its Balboa Park Station.

The new pathway means transit users no longer have to use a narrow walkway just inches away from moving Muni trains.

"It's a big safety improvement," said Anne Halsted, an MTC commissioner, who spoke at the Friday event officially unveiling the changes. MTC provided $315,000 toward the project.

Hundreds of students from nearby Balboa High School, the City College of San Francisco and other campuses are using the new walkway to get to and from BART and Muni trains.

Other improvements to the transportation hub - which sees 25,000 users a day - include better lightning, the addition of a mid-station entrance and a new glass-paneled entryway.
