MTC helped deliver funding to Van Ness corridor bus lane project

San Francisco's new bus rapid transit system along Van Ness Avenue received a boost from MTC's Resolution 3434 – the region’s transit expansion program, which included an endorsement of FTA Small Starts funds for the project.

Money from the Small Starts program was a key source of funding that helped the bus-only lanes open last week. MTC also helps fund the buses that run on the bus lanes through the Transit Capital Priorities program.

The project also provided safety for pedestrians. Some of the new features of the improved Van Ness Avenue include bulb-outs and median refuge spaces to shorten crossing distances and extended countdown signals so that those crossing can see how much time they have before the traffic signal changes, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

MTC and SFMTA are transportation partners.
