May 6 is National Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day

May is National Bike Month, and National Bike & Roll to School Day is happening on Wednesday May 6. There are events throughout the week across the Bay Area. 

Alameda County schools will celebrate this year on Thursday, May 14, to coincide with Bike to Wherever Days. Check with your school to find out what’s happening and get on a Bike Bus near you.

Contra Costa County is encouraging children and adults to celebrate active transportation by participating in Bike to Wherever Days on Thursday, May 14. Learn about their Street Smarts programs, including their year-round Walk N Roll program, which provides support and resources for elementary students, parents and schools. 

Marin County schools will celebrate Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day on May 6, and you can nominate a student Bike Hero through May 24. Any elementary or middle school student who is dedicated to active transportation and spreads the joy of biking, walking or rolling to school can qualify to win one of four $50 gift cards.

Napa County is celebrating biking to school and to work on Thursday, May 14, as Napa County Bike to Work & School Day. Riders of all ages are encouraged to stop by an energizer station for prizes, snacks and fun with fellow cyclists. Napa County residents can Pledge to Ride for special prize drawings, as well.

The San Francisco United School District (SFUSD) is celebrating a whole week of events as part of Bike & Roll to School Week, May 4 - 8. Get in touch with your school administrators to see if your school is participating, and SFUSD students can enter the SFUSD art contest by May 15 for a chance to win prizes.

San Mateo County schools are participating in Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day on May 6 and Bike to Wherever Day on May 14. Check with your school to find out about specific events. The San Mateo County Safe Routes to School Guidebook has great tips for safety and to determine if your child is ready to walk or bike to school alone.

Santa Clara County is marking Bike to School Day on May 6 with different activities, including a bike rack decorating contest. Schools must register by May 15 to participate in the contest.

Solano County schools will celebrate on May 6 by encouraging families and school staff to walk, bike, scoot or roll to class. Anything goes, so long as it’s an active way to get to school. Check out their safe biking and walking resources with videos and tips you can use all year.

Sonoma County schools are celebrating National Bike to School Day on May 6. Check with your school to see if they are participating. Report that you participated and share photos of the day with the Sonoma County Safe Routes to School team.

MTC’s One Bay Area Grant (OBAG) program funds Regional Safe Routes to School grant program, which taps federal money to provide grants to cities, counties and county transportation agencies to fund Safe Routes to School program implementation in all nine Bay Area counties.
