Caltrain's Positive Train Control project has been certified by the Federal Railroad Administration.
The control system provides the corridor with enhanced safety features that monitor train movements and, if necessary, intervene to reduce the possibility of risks caused by human error.
In 2008, following a collision on the Metrolink system in Chatsworth, Congress approved the Rail Safety Improvement Act, which required the installation the technology on all passenger rail corridors and certified for use before the federal deadline of December 31, 2021.
In March 2018, the Caltrain Board approved a contract with Wabtec Railway Electronics, Inc. to complete the project. Caltrain submitted the plan to the FRA for certification in June 2020 and received approval in December.
