Congress is starting to kick the tires on transportation infrastructure funding, with proposals being brought forward in recent days.

What a final package will look like is anyone's guess, but leaders from both parties say something needs to be done.

In late 2017, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released the report: “Renewing the National Commitment to the Interstate Highway System: A Foundation for the Future.”

It outlines plans to fix highway interstates around the country, relying on federal gas taxes and local tolls to do the heavy financial lifting.
