BART is expanding the number of stations where the only fare medium available for purchase is the Clipper card.

BART is rolling out a pilot program to eliminate the sale of paper tickets at the following four stations this summer with systemwide expansion expected in 2020:

  • 19th Street on August 5
  • Embarcadero on August 19
  • Powell Street on September 3
  • Downtown Berkeley on September 24

While paper tickets will no longer be available for purchase at these stations, riders will still be able to use them to enter or exit through fare gates.  Riders will also be able to add enough fare to a paper ticket to exit using add fare machines located inside the paid area of each station.

BART is working to move toward a Clipper-only fare payment system because the region has prioritized the use of Clipper as the Bay Area’s all-in-one transit card administered by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
