MTC’s $200,000 in grants for adaptive bikeshare programs are providing free or low-cost access to adaptive cycling programs for people with disabilities and their friends and families. All ability levels are welcome.

People with disabilities throughout the Bay Area can take advantage of adaptive bikeshare programs in San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland and San Jose.

The Bay Wheels bike share program boasts an average of 300,000 trips each month. The adaptive bikeshare program aims to build on the successes of Bay Wheels while increasing cycling options for people with disabilities.

In San Francisco, up to $95,000 will be used to support the continued operation of the successful adaptive bikeshare program in Golden Gate Park. This program is run in partnership with San Francisco Recreation and Parks, BORP Adaptive Sports & Recreation (BORP), SFMTA and MTC. First launched as a pilot in 2019, the program is now permanent.

The remainder of the grant will support adaptive cycling programs in the South Bay and East Bay.

In San Jose, MTC is working directly with BORP to launch a new adaptive bikeshare pilot program located near the Guadalupe River Trail in San Jose. Borrow an adaptive cycle from the meeting place at Good Karma Bikes (82 South Montgomery Street, San Jose) from June to October on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. MTC funding is supporting the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

In Oakland, BORP will hold pop-up style events throughout the summer and early fall in 2025 and 2026.

BORP will also conduct additional outreach in Berkeley, Oakland and Emeryville to encourage more riders with disabilities to attend their Berkeley Cycling Center program days, located at 80 Bolivar Drive in Berkeley, with direct access to the San Francisco Bay Trail.  Visit the BORP website for more information.

At all locations, multiple types of adaptive cycles are available, such as recumbent cycles, handcycles, side-by-side tandems and more. Program staff and volunteers will be on hand to assist riders with selecting the correct cycle and getting a proper fit. Programs in San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland are free.

Bay Wheels is a partnership between MTC, Lyft and the cities of Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco. Bay Wheels bikes are coming to Daly City this summer.
