What is ahead for housing in 2019? Housing is as volatile as ever in the state and across the region, with home prices in flux and a dearth of affordable units.

A hot topic is the elimination of zoning for single-family homes as happened in Minneapolis, with a goal of promoting higher density and more affordable units. The elimination of the requirement of parking with development has been discussed in San Francisco and Oakland. The idea is to free up space for more housing.

Opportunity zones could help bring more housing to the region. The zones allow private companies to invest in communities and then write off or defer federal taxes on capital gains as an incentive. MTC has a map showing the areas in the Bay Area. But there has been concern voiced that the zones could bring gentrification

In 2019 MTC will be working on CASA, an effort to bring affordable housing to the Bay Area.
