It may be the shortest interstate segment in the Bay Area, but I-380 plays a vital role in connecting travelers from Highway 101 to I-280 and vice-versa.

As we look to the past at Throwback Thursday, we came across a photo of I-380 under construction in South San Francisco in 1974. Since its completion, it has become a vital link for access to San Francisco International Airport.

The segment was established by the December 1968 Federal Aid Highway Act, and it was constructed in the 1970s to replace California 186. Designated as the Portola Freeway at the time of its construction, it was later renamed the Quentin Kopp Freeway in honor of the former state senator.

At one point the segment was to extend all the way to Highway 1 to Pacifica. But concerns about traffic, terrain and earthquakes stunted those plans, capping the intestate at a mere 1.67 miles.

A new report notes the country's interstate system is in need of major upgrades.
