Throwback Thursday: Bay Bridge Construction

Bay Bridge Construction, 1935

We all have seen photos of the Golden Gate Bridge under construction, but visual documentation of the Bay Bridge work doesn't seem as prevalent.

As part of Throwback Thursday, we have delved into MTC's archives and fished out a nice photo of the West Span being built in 1935.

The photo looks to be shot from Yerba Buena Island. Some of the taller structures in San Francisco can be seen, including Coit Tower, which was completed in 1933. Twin Peaks can also be seen in the distance, but missing is Sutro Tower, which wouldn't built for another four decades. The span would open Nov. 12, 1936.

The Bay Bridge's West Span is a topic of discussion now, with MTC leading a look at putting a walkway along the structure.
