By Mark Prado
Golden Gate Bridge

It will be 82 years ago Monday when the Golden Gate Bridge opened for business.

From the MTC archives is an iconic shot of the span in the process of being built in October 1936. I wonder if the fisherman caught anything?

We also dug up some factoids you can use to dazzle your friends when talking about arguably the Bay Area's most beautiful span. Wait. No argument. It is the most beautiful:

  • Total length of the bridge including approaches is 1.7 miles
  • The width of bridge is 90 feet
  • The widths of the sidewalks are 10 feet
  • Clearance of the deck above the water is 220 feet
  • The height of a towers above water is 746 feet
  • The main cables rest on top of the towers in steel castings called saddles
  • The total length of galvanized steel wire used to weave the main cables is 80,000 miles.
