SMART plans Windsor station celebration next month

SMART Windsor Station opening

SMART officials will celebrate the opening of the Windsor SMART station on Friday, June 13 at 1:45 p.m. The Windsor SMART station is not yet open. Passenger service is anticipated to begin in late May or early June.

This latest addition to the SMART rail and pathway network strengthens local and regional connections while advancing sustainable transportation. Located just steps from the Windsor Town Green, the station enhances access to the town’s shops, restaurants, and events by train.

The new station is funded in part by Regional Measure 3, which is administered by MTC's Bay Area Toll Authority. In 2023, SMART announced that $40 million in RM3 toll revenues allocated towards the Windsor and Healdsburg extensions were available The Healdsburg extension is expected to open in 2026.

Despite challenges in recent years such as forest fires and the COVID-19 pandemic, SMART shows growth in pre-pandemic ridership and is operating more rail service than prior to the pandemic. During the first three months of this year,  SMART saw a ridership bump of 38%. That increase means SMART’s ridership averaged 134% of pre-pandemic levels.

SMART serves a market of regional rail between North Bay cities and inter-county travel as well as providing connection to ferry service at Larkspur Station, within walking distance of the Larkspur Ferry Terminal. Once the Windsor station opens, the service will comprise about 50 miles of rail and 14 passenger stations between Sonoma and Marin counties.
