Transportation is a familiar subject for Berkeley photographer Karl Nielsen, who frequently captures arresting images of highway and transit construction, and routinely illuminates a vibrant Bay Area on the move.
In recent weeks Nielsen moved in a different direction, training his lens on a much more muted region transformed by the Covid-19 emergency and orders to eliminate unnecessary travel.
Residents' dignity and determination provide the source of light for this collection, chronicling the second week of shelter-in-place instructions in Marin County, San Francisco and the East Bay.
