The Hayward Eden Area Shoreline Resilience Collaborative — which includes the San Francisco Estuary Partnership — hosted its second public workshop providing community members with updates on sea level rise projects planned for the Hayward shoreline.

Sea level rise and more intense storms are flooding an increasing number of shoreline communities. As a community neighboring the San Francisco Bay, Hayward and its surrounding areas are particularly vulnerable to shoreline flooding.

One powerful tool in combating sea level rise is participation in a series of public workshops held through the Hayward Eden Area Shoreline Resilience Collaborative

The late June workshop at the San Lorenzo Community Center provided community members with updates on the First Mile Horizontal LeveeHayward Nature-based Solutions Project and the HASPA Shoreline Adaptation Implementation Plan. The workshop drew almost 100 community members to review flood risk maps and provide input on near-term projects and community benefits.

SFEP has played several roles in the Hayward Eden Area Resilience Collaborative, including coordinating agencies, consultant teams and community groups, as well as being the funder and project manager.

In addition to SFEP, the collaborative consists of a wide range of public and private partners, including the Greenbelt Alliance, East Bay Dischargers Authority, Teach Earth Action, Plantify, The Watershed Project, and members of the Hayward Area Shoreline Planning Agency (HASPA): City of Hayward, East Bay Regional Parks District, Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, and Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District. This collection of private and public partners was brought together through their mutual work on projects that prevent sea level rise.
