SF Central Subway project rolling along

By Mark Prado

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority has shared a Central Subway project construction update via video.

Last year saw milestones for the project, including the reopening of Stockton Street through Chinatown and Union Square as well as some of the major final touches to the stations like escalators and public art, according to the agency.

The project aims to wrap-up most construction this summer followed by about a year of testing to make sure the trains run properly. After the testing period, the Central Subway is projected to begin service in the fall of 2021.

MTC made the $1.57 billion Central Subway project a top regional priority in the nationwide competition for funding through the Federal Transit Administration’s New Starts program.
