SamTrans has approved an express bus feasibility study, which outlines the agency’s plan to ease freeway congestion in San Mateo County.

As a result, a pilot is launching in mid-2019. The first two routes recommended by the study would run between Foster City and downtown San Francisco and between Palo Alto and the west side of San Francisco via Daly City.

Express bus routes make fewer stops, reducing travel time compared to local bus routes. The buses travel in carpool lanes to speed times.

Goals of the study include providing additional mobility options for regional trips, increasing the number of people who use transit along the Highway 101 corridor and improving transportation equity.

SamTrans has been awarded $15 million in state funds, partially from Senate Bill 1, the gas tax, to launch an express bus pilot program. MTC officials worked on the technical advisory committee as part of the study.
