Zippy, fun and functional, electric scooters are a new part of the transportation landscape, as well as a new source of injuries, a study by Consumer Reports shows.

Since late 2017, more than 1,500 injuries connected to scooters have been reported across the country to both riders and pedestrians, according to the report.  Speeds generally top out at 15 mph, but there can be many obstacles to negotiate in an urban area.

And as of 2019 helmets are not required for adults on scooters in California.

The number of accidents is believed to be higher because not all hospitals categorize scooter-related accidents, according to the report.
