While it has been said San Francisco is in decline, findings from RentCafe's  2024 Most Livable Metro Areas report ranks the city as the 18th most livable metro in the country.

Although San Francisco is known for its high cost of living, it is the only California metro area to rank high on the list.

In analyzing 140 U.S. metros across 17 key metrics, the report notes San Francisco’s unparalleled quality of life, the cultural community, and economic resilience make it a desirable place to live for those who seek a well-rounded lifestyle.

Here’s why San Francisco stands out this year, accoring to the report:

Quality of Life (#1)

San Francisco takes the top spot for quality of life, with nearly universal access to exercise opportunities (98.8%) and an impressive concentration of healthcare providers (32 per 10,000 people). Additionally, its lower uninsured rate (4.8%) and ample green spaces contribute to a health-oriented, active environment. Residents here have access to top-notch healthcare and wellness resources — a rare blend for urban centers.

Community & Location (#4)

San Francisco is renowned for its cultural scene, boasting one of the highest per capita rates of arts, entertainment, and recreation venues in the country. With a social association rate of 7.4 per 10,000 people, the city provides abundant opportunities for residents to connect with one another through cultural and community organizations.

Socioeconomic Strengths (#121)

Despite the high cost of living (55% above the national average), San Francisco’s strong income growth rate of 5.8%, low poverty rate (8.6%), and highly educated workforce contribute to its economic resilience. The city’s unemployment rate of 5.2% is also notable in a large, highly competitive metro area.

Still, livability is a compromise between advantages and drawbacks. San Francisco finds challenges in this category:

  • Has one of the highest U.S. cost of living at 55% above the national average.
  • Nearly half (46%) of inhabitants report commutes spanning more than 30 minutes, a feature of metropolitan life that can affect work-life balance.
  • About 22.4% of San Francisco residents deal with serious housing problems, which reflect the pressure on the local housing supply and demand.
