Point2, an international real estate search portal, looked at how much the median house would currently “weigh” in gold in the 100 largest U.S. metro areas. Here are some highlights for the Bay Area:

  • Homeowners in the San Jose metro area are the most gold-rich in the country. The median house here “weighs” 694 ounces of gold (4.5 times more than the national median house). The second spot in the ranking is taken by the San Francisco metro area, with 507 ounces
  • The median house in the San Jose metro area is 541 ounces “heavier” than the national median house. This difference alone is the equivalent of two houses in Metro New York
  • The difference in “weight” between the median house in San Francisco and the median American house would secure a home in any of the most sought-after U.S. urban centers
  • Although they are the “heaviest” in the country, homes in the Bay Area lost some “weight” in the last three years. Compared to 2017, the median house in San Jose lost 179 ounces, while the median house in San Francisco lost 159 ounces.
