A recent New York Times opinion piece says technology can be the enemy of safety and urges the return of the stick shift in automobiles.
Anyone who has driven a stick shift can attest to the fun they can be, although the hills of San Francisco can present some stomach-churning moments.
In the Times' opinion piece, the author argues that in order to drive a stick shift a driver must be at full attention. Automated gizmos found in today's cars give drivers a false sense of security, he says.
Whether correct or not, the piece brought a lot of fans of the stick shift to the fore who penned letters to the newspaper.
