Drivers will see something new after they cross the Golden Gate Bridge in the coming years.

A gantry with an open truss design and channel columns will be built for toll collection. It is expected to be in operation as soon as 2020.

The gantry is 20-feet-high and will be built 140 feet south of the existing toll plaza. The gantry will have motion sensors, antennas, lights and cameras to assess tolls.

In March 2013, the bridge went to all-electronic tolling with more video equipment added to the existing toll booths to replace toll takers. There are no current plans to remove the existing toll plaza.

MTC has worked with bridge officials on various projects over the years.
