September 19 - 26 marks the annual National Estuaries Week aimed at drawing attention to the vital bodies of water locally and around the nation. Locally, look here for posts about the week.
You can find more information on the San Francisco Estuary and estuaries in general at www.sfestuary.org. The San Francisco Estuary Partnership is an ABAG program staffed by MTC working to increase the health and resiliency of the San Francisco Estuary.
San Francisco Bay is the largest estuary — about 1,600 square miles — on the Pacific Coast and it is widely recognized as one of North America’s most ecologically important estuaries. It accounts for about 80 percent of California’s remaining wetlands, providing key habitat for a broad suite of flora and fauna — more than 750 species of plants and animals, including native and conservation status species, as well as wintering migratory shorebirds.
The celebration first originated in 1988 as National Estuaries Day, an annual event founded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to engage the public in America’s estuaries through outreach and stewardship events.
