As part of the Bay Area’s Affordable Housing Month – a time of conversations and events highlighting the impact of affordable housing in the Bay Area – staff from MTC and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) participated in three panel discussions and highlighted the agencies’ work in the housing sector.
MTC and ABAG work to further the housing strategies outlined in Plan Bay Area 2050, the Bay Area’s long-range plan for transportation, housing, the economy and the environment. As part of those strategies, MTC and ABAG work with California legislators and the governor to craft funding and policy solutions that can help solve the Bay Area’s affordable housing challenges. The agencies provide technical assistance to jurisdictions to increase housing production and work on production, preservation and tenant protections programs through the Bay Area Housing Finance Authority (BAHFA), the state’s first regional housing finance authority.
BAHFA co-hosted the webinar “Bay Area Eviction Research and Opportunities to Protect Tenants” on May 6 in partnership with the Raise the Roof Coalition, the Stanford Community Law Clinic and All Home. This conversation focused on recent and upcoming research on evictions in the region and opportunities to protect tenants.
BAHFA Anti-Displacement Program Manager Irene Farnsworth previewed the forthcoming BAHFA regional eviction study findings, which are expected to be released later this summer. Learn more and view the webinar.
Daniel Saver, MTC’s deputy executive director for housing and energy, joined the May 1 panel “Tracking Housing Elements: Ensuring Cities Follow Through on Their Plans.” This conversation focused on strategies for tracking cities’ progress on housing element implementation, overcoming implementation barriers, and leveraging resources to support effective housing production and preservation. The webinar was hosted by SPUR, Partnership for the Bay's Future, East Bay Housing Organizations and Public Advocates. Watch the webinar recording.
On May 28, MTC Principal Planner Mark Shorett participated in “Unlocking Public Land for Affordable Housing,” a webinar hosted by SV@Home with staff from LISC Bay Area, the East Bay Asian Local Development Corp., and Black Cultural Zone. Panelists discussed creating affordable housing on public land. Read more about this webinar.
Established in 2019 as the state’s pioneering regional housing entity, BAHFA focuses on large-scale solutions for affordable housing production, preservation and tenant protections. It is jointly governed by the BAHFA Board, which is composed of the same members as the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and the Association of Bay Area Governments.
