A recent Cal Matters piece highlighted the future of self-driving cars in the state, and while the technology is promising, there are still hurdles.

The vehicles could help take cars off the road, improve air quality and provide services to those who can't drive now because of physical limits, but there are issues of safety that still must be resolved, the article notes.

And there is the public perception: many people think the things aren't safe, according to a AAA survey.

But one way or another, autonomous vehicles will be part of the future, it's just hard to gauge how soon.

Autonomous vehicles are being tracked by MTC through its Horizon initiative.
