The Metropolitan Transportation Commission is seeking people with disabilities who use transit services in the Bay Area to join our new Accessibility Working Group.

This volunteer group will help guide MTC's Regional Mapping and Wayfinding project, which aims to make navigating transit easier across the Bay Area by improving the consistency and usability of maps, signs, displays and other wayfinding materials.

The Accessibility Working Group will provide an important space for transit riders with disabilities to share their experiences and perspectives directly with the project team. Members will help evaluate prototype wayfinding signage and materials through an accessibility lens.

The Working Group will consist of 12-14 members who meet roughly once a month until the pilot projects are completed. MTC is exploring options to compensate members for their time.

To be eligible, you must have lived experience as a person with a disability who uses Bay Area transit services. Prior experience serving on advisory committees or engaging with transit agencies is desired but not required.

As a Working Group member, you would be expected to:

  • Attend meetings and review materials to provide feedback based on your knowledge and experiences.
  • Potentially share non-confidential project information with affiliated organizations.
  • Keep all preliminary project materials confidential until publicly released by MTC.
  • Follow group ground rules established at the first meeting.

How to Apply:

Each of the seven largest Bay Area transit agencies will nominate one representative for the Working Group. The smaller operators will jointly nominate three representatives. MTC will also select between two and four "at-large" members from public applications.

To apply for an at-large seat, please answer a few questions on this online form: https://mtc.one/advisor and submit a brief statement of interest highlighting your experience and perspective as a transit rider with a disability.

The application deadline is Friday, May 3, 2024, at 11:59 pm. Selected Working Group members will be notified by mid-May, with the first meeting targeted for early June 2024.

We look forward to hearing from you. Help shape a more accessible transit system for all Bay Area riders.
