Electric cars coming into focus as Plan Bay Area 2050 moves forward

The era of the electric car may have arrived. They are cheaper in the long termbetter for the environment and Gov. Gavin Newsom is now looking to help boost sales among all income levels.

Planning now going on at ABAG and MTC as part of Plan Bay Area 2050 also looks at the issue. Forty percent of the Bay Area’s greenhouse gas emissions are produced by transportation, with exhaust from cars and trucks the biggest single source.

The recently approved Plan Bay Area 2050 Blueprint notes an environmental strategy of expanding investments in clean vehicles, including more fuel-efficient vehicles and electric vehicle subsidies and chargers to address the issue.

MTC's Climate Initiatives Program invests in eight programs including electric cars focused on technology advancements and incentives for travel options to help the region meet state-mandated greenhouse gas emission targets.
