The SFMTA's Central Subway work continues, although it has been slowed by COVID-19.
The project aims to wrap-up most construction in spring 2021, followed by about a year of testing to make sure the trains run properly. After the testing period, the Central Subway is projected to begin service in spring 2022.
Last year saw milestones for the project, including the reopening of Stockton Street through Chinatown and Union Square as well as some of the major final touches to the stations like escalators and public art, according to the agency.
MTC made the $1.57 billion Central Subway project a top regional priority in the nationwide competition for funding through the Federal Transit Administration’s New Starts program.
