It will cost another $1 to ride halfway to the stars on San Francisco’s famed cable cars as of Jan. 1.

The new fare will be $8, with the changes applying to Clipper Card and MuniMobile users as well as in-person sales.

More money is needed to run and improve San Francisco’s transportation system, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

There are discounted fares for all seniors, youth and people with disabilities, and free trips for seniors, youth and people with disabilities who are low income, and those who have a Lifeline pass.
