The work of the Bay Area Regional Energy Network (BayREN) is highlighted in a new report from the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), a global organization dedicated to research in the field of sustainability, with a focus on energy and resource efficiency.
RMI's report notes for decades energy efficiency incentive programs have helped reduce utility bills, cut waste, and clean up the environment. States and utilities spend about $9 billion annually on these programs, but only up to to 3% of U.S. households take advantage of them. Why? The programs are overly complex.
The report presents best practices for program administrators, utility regulators, policymakers, and advocates to make energy efficiency programs more simple, market-friendly, durable, and equitable.
BayREN's Multifamily program is highlighted in the report as a model for streamlining the process, reducing hurdles for property owners and contractors to implement energy-saving upgrades.

BayREN is also recognized in the report for its commitment to workforce development and training, particularly through a partnership with Rising Sun Center for Opportunity, which equips youth with the skills needed for employment in the clean energy sector.

BayREN is a collaboration between the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and the nine San Francisco Bay Area Counties formed in 2013 to promote energy and resource efficiency. As one of the state’s Regional Energy Networks (RENs), BayREN provides regional-scale energy efficiency programs, services, and resources that reflect the needs of local residents, property and business owners, governments and more.
