May is Bike Month in the Bay Area, and since hybrid work is part of the new normal, “Bike to Wherever Days” (BTWD) is continuing across the nine counties – Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma – which will include Bike to Work Day on May 18.

This year marks the 29th edition of this event and will include bike-focused programs across the region all month long, with an emphasis on Bike to Work Day, with energizer stations along popular bike routes, prizes, commemorative bags and more.

“Bikes are a growing and important part of the transportation network around the Bay Area,” said Alfredo Pedroza, MTC chairman. “In this time of change in commute patterns, it’s critical that we look at all modes to get people moving in the region, and bikes play a big role.”

BTWD brings together residents of the Bay Area counties to celebrate bicycling. It helps new and experienced riders build community, promotes pedaling as a means of transportation, and improves the health of residents, as well as the environment.

More than one million Bay Area residents live within five miles of their workplaces, an ideal distance for bicycling. With many residents on a hybrid work schedule, we are encouraging people to bike to shop, for errands, or bike to school with their children as a way to participate in Bike Month.

During Bike Month, county bike coalitions offer classes, activities, education and more. And while each county celebrates all cyclists within its boundaries, one dedicated rider is chosen as its Bike Champion of the Year. This year’s award winners will be announced in late April.

For those who need a little extra encouragement to ride during May – and after Bike Month is over – riders are encouraged to make a pledge to cycle through their respective county coalitions. For details on how to make that pledge – and to learn more about what’s going on in each county – visit Bayareabiketowork.com.

BTWD 2023 also receives regional support from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), and Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), as well as from many sponsors at the local level. Prizes for the Bike Champion of the Year winners will be donated by MTC-ABAG, Mike’s Bikes and Sports Basement.
