SMART’s Windsor Extension Project was selected to receive the 2025 Outstanding Transportation Project Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) San Francisco Section.

The station is funded in part by Regional Measure 3, which is administered by MTC's Bay Area Toll Authority. In 2023, SMART announced that $40 million in RM3 toll revenues allocated towards the Windsor and Healdsburg extensions were available.

The recognition underscores the planning, engineering, and teamwork that went into extending SMART service north to Windsor. The project reflects years of collaboration among SMART staff, contractors, local agencies, and community partners, all working together to deliver a vital piece of regional infrastructure.

The award not only celebrates the technical achievements of the project but also highlights its importance in expanding sustainable transportation options for the North Bay.

The Windsor expansion marked a major milestone in SMART’s mission to provide sustainable, regional transportation for communities across Sonoma and Marin counties — and is the first of three northern extensions SMART plans to complete in the coming years.

The opening of the Windsor station sets the stage for the next phase of SMART’s expansion, which will extend passenger rail service to Healdsburg, followed by Cloverdale, completing the original vision for the SMART system.
